Glossary S
Special Nuclear Material (SNM) is defined in 10 CFR 20.1003 as "(1) Plutonium, uranium-233, uranium enriched in the isotope 233 or in isotope 235, and any other material that the NRC, pursuant to the provisions of section 51 of the AEA, determines to be SNM, but does not include source material; (2) or any material artificially enriched by any of the foregoing but does not include source material."
Deutsch: Art / Español: Especie / Português: Espécie / Français: Espèce / Italiano: Specie /
Species refers to a fundamental concept in the environmental context, representing a distinct category of living organisms capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring under natural conditions. In the context of biodiversity and ecosystems, the term plays a pivotal role in understanding the diversity of life on Earth. It is critical for assessing ecological relationships, conserving natural habitats, and comprehending the intricate web of life that sustains our planet's ecosystems.
Deutsch: Artenvielfalt / Español: diversidad de especies / Português: diversidade de espécies / Français: diversité des espèces / Italiano: diversità delle specie
Species diversity in the environmental context refers to the variety of species within a particular region or ecosystem. It is a key component of biodiversity, encompassing both the number of different species (species richness) and the relative abundance of each species (species evenness).
A specific conductance is a measure of the ability of water to conduct an electrical current as measured using a 1-cm cell and expressed in units of electrical conductance, i.e., Siemens per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius.

Spider anatomy in the environmental context refers to the study of the physical structure of spiders, which are vital components of terrestrial ecosystems. Understanding spider anatomy is crucial for comprehending their roles in natural habitats, including their predatory behavior that helps control insect populations, their contribution to pollination, and their use of silk for various purposes, such as creating webs for trapping prey, lining burrows, and protecting eggs.
Deutsch: Spirometer / Español: Espirómetro / Português: Espirômetro / Français: Spiromètre / Italiano: Spirometro
Spirometer in the environmental context refers to a medical device used to measure lung function, specifically by gauging the volume of air inhaled and exhaled by the lungs. While primarily a tool in healthcare, spirometers are significant in environmental studies for assessing the impact of air quality and pollution on respiratory health in human populations.
Deutsch: Spirometrie / Español: Espirometría / Português: Espirometria / Français: Spirométrie / Italiano: Spirometria /
A Spirometry is a medical test that measures how well the lungs exhale. The information gathered during this test is useful in diagnosing certain types of lung disorders, but it is most useful when assessing for obstructive lung diseases (especially asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)).
Deutsch: Löffelvoll / Español: Cucharada / Português: Colherada / Français: Cuillerée / Italiano: Cucchiaiata
Spoonful in the environmental context is often used as a metaphorical or practical measure representing small, precise quantities of substances that can significantly impact ecosystems or environmental processes. This term may describe amounts of chemicals, nutrients, pollutants, or other materials whose effects are disproportionate to their size in environmental systems.
Deutsch: Kreischen / Español: Graznido / Português: Grasnar / Français: Cri strident / Italiano: Stridio
Squawk in the environmental context refers to the loud, sharp, or harsh vocalisation made by certain birds or animals, often as a form of communication. Squawking plays a significant role in wildlife behaviour, helping species warn of danger, establish territory, attract mates, or communicate with their group.
Deutsch: kreischen / Español: graznido / Português: grasnido / Français: cri / Italiano: stridio
Squawking refers to the loud, harsh sounds made by birds, often as a form of communication. In the environmental context, squawking is significant in understanding avian behavior, interactions, and the health of ecosystems.
