The term adaptation may refer to any one of the following:

  • a biological process in which an organism or species changes one or more of its traits over time in order to become better suited to its habitat
  • Literary adaptation, a type of derivative work wherein a literary work is used as a basis for another literary work or a work of a different artistic medium
  • Theatrical adaptation, a type of derivative work wherein a source from another artistic medium is used as a basis for a play, musical or other theatrical performance
  • Film adaptation, a type of derivative work wherein a source from another artistic medium or another film is used as a basis for a film
  • Adaptation, a 2002 dramedy meta-film starring Nicolas Cage, Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper
  • Neural adaptation (or sensory adaptation), a gradual change to a sensory system's responsiveness to certain stimuli
  • Behavioral adaptation (or adaptive behavior), a type of behavior that is used as a means to adjust to a situation or another behavior
  • Psychological adaptation (also evolved psychological mechanism, EPM), a type of evolved behavior in humans and/or animals as a result of evolutionary pressures
  • Hedonic adaptation (or hedonic treadmill), a tendency in humans to quickly return to a relatively stable level of happiness regardless of major positive or negative life changes
  • Adaptation, a process in computer science wherein an adaptive or interactive system changes its behavior based on acquired information on its users and environment
